Course 5: Intersectionality and Disability

In this course, we define intersectionality, identify intersectional identities, explore the social model of disability, and apply intersectionality to the social model of disability. We practice application through a few case scenarios. And then, we address the intersectionality of rurality and disability.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Define Intersectionality in the Context of Disability: Participants will define intersectionality and examine how the onset, progression, and expected duration of disability influence clients' holistic functioning, including their adjustment and adaptation to disability.

2. Analyze Intersections of Identity and Disability: Participants will identify how disability interacts with other client identities, emphasizing the role of families, communities, and social networks in addressing environmental, attitudinal, and individual barriers.

3. Explore the Social Model of Disability: Participants will evaluate the Social Model of Disability and its implications for promoting principles of independent living, self-determination, and informed choice within diverse rehabilitation settings.

4. Apply Intersectionality in Practice: Participants will apply their understanding of intersectionality to develop case management strategies that enhance access to housing, employment, public benefits programs, assistive technology, and other rehabilitation service delivery systems.

5. Consider the Impact of Rurality and Disability: Participants will analyze how the intersection of rurality and disability affects access to services and resources, including community rehabilitation, public and proprietary vocational rehabilitation programs, and career-related assessments.

6. Advocate for Clients with Intersecting Identities and Disabilities: Participants will develop strategies to advocate for accessibility, accommodations, and adherence to disability laws while promoting client self-advocacy skills and informed access to community and technological resources.
